Shoot 9

Shoot 9

Plans for my shoot

Artist influence - Alexey Titarenko & Ed Ruscha

Alexey Titarenko

After already completing two shoots with Alexey Titarenko as an artist influence I wanted to focus on an element of a specific image that he has taken. In some of Titarenko's other images he has used movement to completely cover the peoples faces within his photos. The image above is slightly different to this and made me very inteagued to create this idea myself. He has used a lower shutter speed than he has done in some of the previous photos I have analysed therefore you are able to still see that the image is involving people. The movement that he has captured looks almost ghost like. This is what I want to achieve within my photos.

Ed Ruscha

Although I have focused on Ed Ruscha in some previous shoots I would like to take some other ideas from his work. Previously I have mainly looked at the idea that he uses a wide depth of field within his images. This is something that I would like to incorporate within this shoot however the main idea I would like to bring into my work is creating a collage of images that all relate to eachother. In my previous shoots based on movement I looked at the idea of creating collages using the diptych technique however each of the images I used were taken from the same location with different elements of movement within them. During the edits for this shoot I would like to use different photos that link together to create a collage, just like Ed Ruscha has done with his images of 'twentysix gasoline stations'.

Contact Sheet

The aim for this shoot was to capture movement of people at Liverpool Street station. I had previously visited this station to take photos during shoot 2 however whilst I was doing this I mentioned that I wanted to re visit this station and focus on movement therefore this is what I did. This shoot was successful because I captured movement within the train station which I feel reflected the business of London Liverpool Street. The main focus of this shoot was to capture movement and to reflect the ideas that I expanded upon in my preparatory shoots, the business of London train stations.

My Best Images

I have chosen each of the images below as my best images for this shoot because I feel as though these photos best reflect the movement and business of London train stations. Within each of these photos I like the composition of the image. I also like the way there is a range of photos from the upper level of the station and the lower level. This is something that I wanted to focus on when making plans to complete my shoot and I feel this is an element that has been successful. For each of the images I feel as though I have used the correct camera settings. If I were to have increased the shutter speed then the images would have been over exposed. I was not able to increase the aperture any more due to the restrictions of my camera therefore using a shutter speed of one second worked very well.
1 second    f/29    ISO 100

Images that require improvement

1 second    f/29    ISO 100

I have chosen each of the images above as photos that need improvement because I do not feel as though they reflect the aims of my shoot. In each of these locations there was not many people therefore I was not able to capture as much motion as I would have liked. I feel as though the correct camera settings were used due to the images having a good exposure however the photos were not how I would have liked them to be.

Camera Settings and Equipment

When completing this shoot I used a canon eos 400d. I also used a tripod in order to capture movement of people without the rest of the image becoming blurry. With regards to the camera settings I used a high aperture throughout the shoot, f/29. This allowed me to capture images with a wide depth of field. I also used this aperture due to the 1 second shutter speed that I was using. The environment that I was taking photos was  very light therefore using a long shutter speed was allowing more light to be let into the camera. The way that this was balanced out to achieve an even exposure was to increase the aperture in order to make the lens opening smaller and consequently let less light into the camera when taking photos. I also used an ISO 100 throughout to ensure that the camera was not too sensitive to the light and did not pick up more light than was needed.

A03

The images that I produced for this shoot are linked closely to the exam paper due to the photos being of a station. This shoot directly links to the preparatory shoots that I completed because Liverpool Street is a busy station and this is something I have previously focused on within my project. This shoot has followed on from my preparatory shoots. This is also because I have focused on movement within this shoot which was a main focus of my project. Furthermore the images in this shoot heavily focus on the business of London train stations which is the main theme of my project. This is why I wanted to look into this for my exam shoots because I wanted this to link to all my preparatory shoots in order to create a portfolio of images that all link together.

When completing shoot 2 I took photos in Liverpool Street station and within my blogger I said that the image below inspired me to want to re visit this station and focus on the idea of movement. This was my main inspiration for this shoot. Also due to having visited the station to take photos before I was able to take strong photos from many different locations within the station as I was familiar with the location. The image below also closely relates to the harsh contrast in Andre Kertesz's images which is something that I am focusing on during the edits of this shoot. Due to this photo being taken in Liverpool Street I was able to gain a lot of inspiration as to how to use contrast within photos of busy train stations.

Edits

First Experimental edit - using parts of multiple photos to create one image

When completing edits for this shoot I wanted to incorporate photos from previous preparatory shoots.
Firstly I altered both of the images that I wanted to use to black and white.
I then used the ruler to make guide lines. This was done so that I could select areas on the photo that were of equal distance away from eachother.

I then used the marquee tool to select every other secion that I had just created using the guide lines.

I ensured that this icon was selected when I selected every other section. This ensured that I could add to the selection I had previously made.

I then copied and pasted the selection onto the other image that I wanted to use.

Second Experimental Edit - creating a collage

1. Firstly I selected 'file' then 'new' in photoshop. I then created a new document ensuring that it was landscape.
2. I then opened up each photo that I wanted to use.
3. I copied and pasted each image onto the blank document and then used cmd+T to alter the sizing and location of each of the photos.
4. Once this was completed and the images were in the desired location, I merged each layer together. This allowed me to edit the entire image as if it was one.
5. I then altered the photo to black and white and used the curves tool to enhance the contrast.
6. I then used the filter gallery to add a grain effect to the image.

Below is an example of one of the final images that I created.
